Criteria for Surgery

Gastric Bypass Surgery is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as the only proven method of achieving long-term weight control in severe morbid obesity.

To be considered for this program, patients must be 100 lbs over their ideal body weight or have a BMI of at least 40. Patients with a BMI of 35 and certain obesity-related problems may also be eligible for the surgery.  Please see below for details:

  • Failure of Medical Management
  • BMI >40
  • BMI 35-40 with associated significant medical problems
  • Age 16 and over
  • Psychologically stable
  • Medically able to withstand surgery
